Top 5 New Vegan Food Products for Summer Barbecues

Writer's picture: Michael SerrurMichael Serrur

Is the vegan market oversaturated with mysterious meat substitutes, faux chicken, and cross-dressed jackfruit that takes on the appearance of carnitas and pulled pork? Not even close. Here are some of the new animal-product replacements available this summer.

Lightlife Plant-Based ‘Ground’

Looks just like ground beef...if you're into that

With all the fanfare over the Beyond Beef initial public offering, we have forgotten many of the other brands broadening the supermarket’s refrigerated meat-free section. Lightlife Ground is soy free and designed to mimic the appearance of ground beef. Similar to Beyond Beef, Lightlife Ground is made with a base of pea protein and offers 20 grams of protein per serving. The packaging mimics that of traditional ground beef, proudly displaying the pale-pink ‘ground’ inside.

Proper Cookie Dough

All the splendor of raw cookie dough minus the Salmonella, Proper Cookie Dough has a winner on their hands. Proper Cookie Dough launched their product through Kickstarter, committing to their fans to create a vegan raw cookie dough free from allergens and GMO ingredients. I don’t know how they do it, but the brilliant minds over at Proper managed to transform brown rice flour, palm oil, tapioca starch, and cane sugar into a creamy, egg-free, butter-free, cookie dough that includes flavors like Chocolate Chipper, Snickerdoodle, Triple Chocolate, and Sugar Cookie.

Upton’s Naturals: Bar-B-Que Jackfruit

Uncle Sam is in charge of the grill, but Upton’s Bar-B-Que Jackfruit puts you in charge of your destiny. Launched just in time for the grilling/chilling season, this easy to use meat-alternative offers the sensory experiences of summer; it’s spicy, sweet, smoky, and 45 calories per serving.

Kite Hill Kids: Strawberry Banana Yogurt Tubes

Kite Hill, makers of almond-milk yogurts, cheeses, and spreads, is an absolute dynamo. The brand is innovative, playful, and their products are always top notch. And today, Kite Hill is giving those youths of the nation a splendid introduction to the world of plant-based yogurts with their strawberry-banana squeezable yogurts. The products contain a combination of almond milk, sugar, strawberries, banana, tapioca starch (along with some other thickeners) and fruit and vegetable juice (for color).

Very Good Butchers Pepperoni

If you’ve never heard of the Very Good Butchers…well I’ve done my job. They make plant-based meats and charcuterie — with attitude. Their website its hip and gritty (they offer a mail-order service), but their pepperoni is sort of a stand out. Made from adzuki bean, it’s the perfect pepperoni alternative, mimicking its cured cousin in look, texture, and taste.
